Rev. Rob Yule: St Albans and the Charismatic Movement

Retired Presbyterian minister and former moderator, Rob Yule, defines the charismatic movement as a current of divine grace for the renewal of the whole church.  The best-known example of Presbyterian charismatic renewal in the Manawatū is St. Albans. Rob will trace how it grew from a small suburban church plant to become the leading charismatic Presbyterian church in the lower North Island.   But there were other influential Presbyterian charismatics in Palmerston North. John Brook, ecumenical chaplain at Massey University, and Newton Fink, minister of St. Andrew’s, founded the Presbyterian renewal magazine Paraclete, which grew into the world class magazine, Renewal News. St. David’s elder, Ken Wright, founded Teen Challenge and the Palmerston North Christian Centre, and went on to have a leading role in the international development of Youth With A Mission.   Rob himself, while minister of St. Albans, served for more than a decade as a regional advisor to Presbyterian Renewal Ministries, whose leading legacy is a chain of influential renewal churches throughout New Zealand.
